Simon Smith

Chief Engineer
Nottingham Trent University

With responsibility for design, development and maintenance of building services and infrastructures, along with procurement and management of utilities, Simon has been kept busy over the last ten years with Nottingham Trent University’s £350 million drive to provide an inspiring environment for over 30,000 students. Throughout this continued programme of construction and refurbishment the Estates team have ensured consistent positioning as one of the greenest universities in the country and attained construction industry recognition for the quality of their projects.

Although their cradle to grave role could lead them towards simple and robust solutions, Simon’s team frequently utilises the latest developments in building services technologies. Drawing on their own experiences and those gleaned from peers through network exchanges has given the engineering team the ability to fully validate all options, from the cutting edge to the tried and tested, before selecting the most efficient and maintainable designs for their projects.

The renovation of the former Register Office on Shakespeare Street perfectly demonstrates how the tried and tested can be fused with newer technologies to deliver an efficient and pleasing working environment which is also easy to manage and maintain. Knowing their own operational limits ensured the design delivered not only improved efficiency and occupier comfort but also services that can be routinely operated by non-specialist in house staff.
