Professor Ian Knight

Professor at Cardiff University and Director
K2n Ltd

Ian Knight is a Professor in the Welsh School of Architecture at Cardiff University and a Director of K2n Ltd. His research interests are focussed on use of Operational Data to achieve low energy and low carbon buildings in practice.

His education is in Engineering and Physics, but 30 years teaching and research in one of the World’s top Schools of Architecture have provided him with detailed insights into the interdisciplinary nature of the problems to be solved in the transition to a low carbon future, and in particular the vital role played by people.

Ian is a member of CIBSE’s Technical Committee, REHVA’s Technology and Research Committee and a member of the Welsh Government’s Expert Reference Group to the Climate Change, Environment and Rural Affairs Committee.

Regarding this talk, Ian proposed and coordinated the European Commission funded ‘iSERVcmb’ project, which looked at how continuous monitoring and benchmarking impacts on the operational energy use of Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning components in EU buildings. This project used the K2n platform as an underpinning, and has led to amendments in the forthcoming 2017 revised Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, specifically to allow electronic monitoring and control systems to be a route to compliance. The K2n platform is now being used by a number of organisations, including the Education and Skills Funding Agency to show compliance with contractual requirements in their Priority Schools Building Programme.

Professor Ian Knight will be speaking at:
